The lignite is burnt by selectively supplying combustion air, which enables the nitrogen oxide to be limited to the permitted value. More than 99.9 per cent of the dust emitted with the flue gases from the steam generator is precipitated in electrostatic filters. By means of treatment with a lime suspension, the downstream flue gas desulphurisation plant extracts sulphur dioxide from the flue gas. The resulting gypsum is used, amongst other things, in the construction material industry. The cleaned flue gas is released into the atmosphere via the cooling tower.
A BoA power plant unit provides the mains grid with around 980 megawatts and therefore meets the electricity requirements of around six million people. Such a plant is operated by a workforce of around 100 people, while the opencast mining to provide the coal secures several hundred more jobs.
