Since the year 2000, the German federal government has increased the expenditure for researching energy efficiency and renewable energies by more than 100 million euros, whereby more than 490 million euros have been spent so far in total. That corresponds to around six euros per German citizen. In 2007, almost 140 million euros were also spent by the private sector on energy research.
