In 2009, 9% of the primary energy consumption in Germany was already met by renewable energies. Although crude oil, natural gas and coal still provide the mainstays of its energy supplies, it is planned that renewable energies will increasingly replace fossil fuels: renewable energies are scheduled to meet 18% of the total energy consumption by 2020 and 60% by 2050.
